Make Love Poems ~ Live Poetry Show

Wednesday evening, four local Kelowna poets served up a live poetry show called “Make Love Poems” at heART School on Pandosy. Each poetic collaborator, collaborated collaboratively in a love poem collaborative. They wrote #hastag poems on social media leading up to their event, then pinned up #allwedoismakelovepoems Pop-Up-Poetry around Kelowna as an invitation and a gift to whomever found them. Their event included individual work and, your guessed it, collaborative works. The audience was invited to collaborate in an interactive poem, posted HERE. It was an extraordinarily creative and heart warming meeting of intellects, minds and souls. True collaboration.

2. to cooperate with or willingly assist an enemy of one’s country and especially an occupying force

“Every poet who is writing has love poems. No question – its our Achilles heel. We have them in spades. Truly, though, and more accurately, every person EVER has love poems – even if they haven’t written them down, there are bound to be love poems and little scrawled notes of hopes and dreams, stacked up inside of them, like old newspapers lining the hallways of a hoarders apartment, waiting to be read by someone who knows the incantation – the one who learns how to speak the language of their inner world.”

Be the light

Lesley-Anne Evans will soon be leaving gifts of words and light around Kelowna, B.C.. In her ongoing practice of randomly installing illumination into long winter’s nights, Lesley-Anne creates handmade luminaires, and places them alongside tea lights and poems meant to be taken home and enjoyed at leisure. In 2013, installations were placed at Orchard Park Mall, H2O, in parks and neighbourhoods, in addition to a month long installation in the Mission Branch of the ORL.

You can follow these installations at Pop-Up-Poetry and like Pop-Up-Poetry on Facebook, HERE.

Write Out Loud ~ from Page to Podium

Local writers will share the podium next Thursday at the Okanagan Institute Express. Lesley-Anne Evans will talk about the elusive nature of living a writers life and will read some recent works.

» Bohemian Café, 524 Bernard Ave, Kelowna
» $2 at the door. Refreshments are available.
» Space is limited. Reserve your seat HERE

At this signature event we will hear from poet Lesley-Anne Evans; novelist Linda Grant; medical memorialist Sterling Haynes; teacher and author Alix Hawley; and teacher, writer, comedian, filmmaker, artist and occasional clown Michael Smith. SEE SPEAKER DETAILS HERE.

When Alice Munro won the 2004 Giller Prize, her victory speech recalled rejections from the beginning of her career: there she was on TV 73 years old, utterly triumphant as a writer. kvetching about 40-year-old-slights. “I never read Canadian authors,” she recalled being told. “I never read fiction – I can’t get what it’s about.” These petty little tortures are true for every writer of every time and every place.

Writers of all genres, be it fiction, crime, comedy, life experience, poetry or history often toil in silence, craving the opportunity to share their work.

Recognizing the need to provide such opportunity, the Okanagan Institute invited five local literary personalities to provide a varied range of voices and creative works.

One date, two events…
